08-08-08. To most, this is the opening day of the Olympics. To me, it's much, much more. Today is my mom's birthday.
My mom is the friendliest person you'll ever meet. She's the one who taught me that it's perfectly okay to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. She can make a friend in a minute and make you feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.
Growing up, my dad traveled a lot for his job, so it was just me, my sister and my mom on our own for many weeks at a time. Couple that with living in a foreign country where we didn't speak the language and we were forced to rely on each other. Out of this, she taught me to be independent and to not wait on a man to get things done. Need to hang something? The heel of your shoe makes a suitable substitute for a hammer. Yard work? Get your old sneakers on and get your hands dirty.
She taught me to smile when you don't know what to say and to always, always, always send a thank you note, even for the littlest of things. She showed me that food should never be wasted, a lesson she learned as a little girl who often went hungry. I learned that a guest should never leave your house hungry or thirsty and that you always bring a gift for the hostess.
My mom taught me to love animals (and people) no matter what they look like. As a child, she used to bring home mangy stray dogs that she found in the streets of Baltimore to care for them. I donate supplies and my time to saving homeless animals. She taught me to care for those less fortunate and to share what you have.
Through her example, my mom showed me how to be a woman and a wife. She taught me to pick my battles, but to stand up for the things that really matter most. She showed me that it's okay to get mad, but you eventually have to forgive in the end. Just let them sweat it out for a bit! I can't wait to make her a grandmother because I just know she'll embrace that role with as much enthusiasm and gusto as she has her role as a mom.
I couldn't have asked for a better mother and I love her with all my heart. Happy birthday, Mom! I hope your day is as beautiful as you are.
